Quality Matters(TM):
Inter-Institutional Quality Assurance in Online Learning
Institutions must address the issue of quality assurance of
online courses and how it relates to student learning. This orientation will discuss the activities
of the Maryland-based, nationally-recognized, Quality Matters(TM)
project, which is designed to address various issues in online course quality. This session will provide an overview of
various aspects of the Quality Matters(TM) project including inter-institutional
peer course review, a rubric based on national standards and the research
literature, faculty training, instructional design support. This session will be of interest to faculty, staff,
administrators, and instructional designers, with an interest in online
teaching and learning. Participants will
leave with an understanding of the issues surrounding quality assurance in
online courses, a set of tools and rubrics to adapt and use, and an invitation
to participate in the Quality Matters(TM) project.
Session II:
11:00 am - 12:30 pm
Using Quality Matters(TM) to
Develop Your Online Course
This hands-on workshop will focus on using the Quality
Matters(TM) rubric in the initial design and development of an online
course. This session will be of interest
to faculty, staff, and instructional designers who are very new to online
teaching and learning. Participants will
leave with a roadmap for the design and development of their online
course. (Participants in this workshop
should have first attended the 9:00-10:45 am Quality Matters(TM) orientation
session.)
Using the Quality Matters(TM) Rubric to Improve Your Online Course
Date: January 4-17, 2007
Location: Online
Maximum: 40 People
The Quality
Matters(TM) Project is designed to improve the quality of online courses by
establishing a peer-review quality assurance process. This training will explore the Quality
Matters(TM) Project and rubric and will provide you with the framework to improve
the quality of your online course.
Participants in this hands-on workshop will use the Quality Matters(TM)
rubric to review their online course, and to identify strong areas of their
course and generate ideas for improvements in other areas. In addition, participants will develop a
course improvement plan that includes an articulation the course modifications
the faculty member wishes to make, the resources and support needed to make
these modifications, and a timeline for making these modifications. This session will be of interest to faculty, staff,
and instructional designers, who have already developed an online course. ( As
the basis for their work in this training session, participants will be asked
to select and bring one of their previously-developed online courses to the
training.)
Quality Matters(TM) Peer Reviewer Training
Date: January 12, 2007
Time: 9:00am - 3:30pm
Location: Towson University
Maximum: 30 People
The Quality
Matters(TM) Project is designed to improve the quality of online courses by
establishing a peer-review quality assurance process. This training will explore the Quality
Matters(TM) Project and processes and will train you to become a Quality Matters(TM)
Peer Course Reviewer. You will become familiar with the Quality Matters(TM)
toolset and participate in a peer course review of online courses using the
review tools. Ideally, participants in this hands-on workshop should be
experienced online instructors, instructional designers and/or faculty
trainers. After successfully completing this training, you will be eligible to
serve on a Quality Matters(TM) peer course review. In addition you will gain ideas
to improve your own courses. This
session will be of interest to faculty, staff, administrators, and
instructional designers, with some prior experience in online course
development and teaching.
