UMCES President Boesch Appointed Chair of National Research Council Ocean Studies Board

Joins Two USM Scientists Leading NRC Environmental Studies

Adelphi, Md. (Dec. 22, 2009) - Dr. Donald F. Boesch, University System of Maryland Vice Chair for Sustainability and President of the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, has been appointed as the Chair of the Ocean Studies Board of the National Research Council (NRC).

Boesch joins two other University System of Maryland scientists currently serving as chairs of NRC boards examining environmental issues. Dr. Claire Welty of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County currently chairs the Water Science and Technology Board and Dr. Antonio Busalacchi of the University of Maryland, College Park, chairs of the Board on Atmospheric Science and Climate.

"Don Boesch has played an important role in bringing his unique perspective to our efforts to improve the health of the Bay and to address climate change.  I am delighted that Don will serve as yet another Maryland ambassador at the prestigious National Academy of Sciences," said Governor Martin O'Malley. "That we have three of our leading environmental scientists chairing these important boards at the same time is a reflection of both the importance of these issues to Maryland and the national distinction of our University System."

"The appointments highlight the strength of our programs and the excellence of our leadership related to water resources, oceans and climate," said William E. Kirwan, Chancellor of the University System of Maryland. "These National Research Council boards are at the front lines in understanding the dramatic changes occurring to our climate, oceans and coastal regions, and play a critical role in ensuring the inclusion of sound science into prudent public policies."

Part of the National Academy of Sciences, the NRC conducts studies to improve government decision making and public policy, increase public understanding, and promote the acquisition off knowledge related to science and technology. The Ocean Studies Board explores the science and policies needed to understand and protect coastal and marine environments and resources. Boesch succeeds Dr. Marcia McNutt, who was appointed by President Barak Obama as the Director of the U.S. Geological Survey.
