JOB SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision, performs semi-skilled duties and tasks related to the operation, navigation, and maintenance of inland and coastal research vessels of up to 100 gross tons.


PRIMARY DUTIES


1. Steers vessel on pre-determined course. Performs simple piloting to maintain vessel on course and to avoid shoals, bouys, and other vessels.


2. Plans, prepares and serves up to three meals a day. Purchases food and other supplies.


3. Assists in the routine maintenance and repair to diesel engines, winches, rigging, and other shipboard equipment.


4. Maintains interior and exterior of vessel in a clean and sanitary condition.


5. Dispenses diesel fuel into vessel's tanks; fills fresh water tanks.


6. Prepares, primes, and paints aluminum, steel, and wood surfaces.


7. Rigs trawls, dredges, submersible pumps, and other scientific sampling gear for over-the-side deployment. Loads and unloads gear.


8. Handles mooring lines when vessel is docking/undocking.


9. Operates winches to anchor vessel or deploy scientific sampling gear.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE: Two years in the operation, maintenance, and repair of vessels of at least 30 feet in length.

OTHER:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

General knowledge of and skill in a variety of semi-skilled boat maintenance and repair practices. Ability to read a compass and use a fathometer; to operate a winch and other simple hoisting mechanisms. Knowledge of diesel engines, plumbing, electrical circuits, and carpentry. Ability to plan, prepare and serve meals; to prepare and maintain shopping lists; to purchase provisions and other minor supplies. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to communicate effectively. Ability to work in, on,around, over and under fixed equipment or machinery; to work at heights up to 50 feet; manipulation of heavy equipment, tools, supplies and/or exertion of force up to 70 pounds; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces and under adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

OTHER:

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations and drug test (per U.S. Coast Guard requirements) to determine physical ability to perform the job. Weekend, holiday, shift work, on-call and overnight travel will be required. Valid Maryland Non-commerical Class C or equivalent driver'slicense may be required.
