Success Stories
The USM attracts close to $1.28 billion in extramural funding annually, of which almost 66% comes from federal
sources and approximately 10% from industrial sponsors. Collectively, the USM is ranked 11th in total sponsored
research funding in the country and is ranked 9th in funding from industrial sources. IP-based start-ups grew
significantly from 6 start-ups in FY 2011 to 12 start-ups in FY 2015. Additionally, the number of USM invention
disclosures, which is a leading indicator in the commercialization process, increased by 36% to 384 invention
disclosures in FY 2014.
With 200 tenants, USM research parks are home to 5,950 jobs and $1.125 billion in capital investments
