Regents Approve Tuition, Technology Fee
The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents approved a Fiscal
Year 2003 tuition rate of 5.5 percent for resident undergraduates at all 11
degree-granting institutions in the USM, with the exception of the University of
Maryland University College, which will see an increase of 4.5 percent. In all
cases, the amount is 1.5 percent above the previous ceiling of 4 percent, and
was necessitated by a tight state budget. Non-resident undergraduate and
resident/non-resident graduate-level increases range from 1.5 to 5.5 percent.
The Board encouraged the institutions to devote an appropriate amount of the
increase to institutional financial aid programs.
The Board voted on the tuition increase during a special public session on May
15 in the USM Office in Adelphi.
In addition, the Board voted to approve a newly created technology fee for use
by the institutions to enhance and implement new student-related technology
services. Each campus will apply the proceeds of the fee to applications
complementary to its academic mission in the area of information technology.
The technology fee is $120 per year for full-time students at most institutions.
At the University of Maryland, College Park it will be $50. At the University of
Maryland Eastern Shore and Salisbury University, it will be $100 each. The fee
for part-time students is lower in nearly all cases.
