At the state level, the office deals with operating and capital budget issues as well as a broad range of legislative policy issues related to higher education. At the national level, the office works with members of Maryland’s Congressional Delegation to advocate for the USM’s federal priorities.
Located across from the Maryland State House in Annapolis, the office of government relations works to ensure that the USM’s priorities are shared with key policy leaders. The office also keeps the USM community informed of important issues and assists faculty, staff and students with legislative advocacy.
As legislative issues arise that either support and further USM policies and goals or run counter to them, the government relations office assists in the identification of these issues and provides advice to the USM Chancellor, Vice Chancellors, USM Presidents, faculty, staff and students.
The USM State Relations Council is comprised of a representative from each of the USM member institutions as well as USM government relations staff. The council meets every Friday during the legislative session and periodically during the interim to collaborate on higher education policy issues. Institution-specific issues are pursued by the institutional representatives with assistance and support from USM government relations staff.
This site is designed to help inform those interested in the legislative issues affecting the USM and the broader higher education community.
