Committee on Education Policy to Discuss Undergraduate

Student Learning Outcomes at September 28 Meeting

ADELPHI, Md (September 22, 2004) —The Committee on Education Policy of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents at its next meeting will discuss the Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Reports prepared by USM institutions. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am Tuesday, September 28, at Bowie State University. It will be held in the Library Conference Room on the second floor of the Thurgood Marshall Library.

The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) requires each higher education institution in Maryland to report every three years on its progress in improving student learning, instructional effectiveness, and curriculum. MHEC guidelines for reporting on student learning outcome assessments focus on five core competency areas: written and oral communication, scientific and quantitative reasoning, critical analysis and reasoning, technological competency, and information literacy.

USM institutions submitted their most recent Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Reports to MHEC in August. At Tuesday's meeting, the Education Policy Committee of the USM board will discuss the system institutions' progress in developing and implementing the assessment processes.

Other business on the September 28 meeting agenda are:

·        Proposed modification of the USM Policy on Appointment, Rank and Tenure of Faculty;

·        Formation of a System-wide Council on Alcohol Use and Abuse;

·        Tentative 2004-05 Agenda for the Committee on Education Policy.

Full agendas and background information will be available at the meeting. Sign language interpreters and/or other appropriate accommodations for eligible individuals with disabilities will be provided upon request. Please call 301.445.2756 (voice) or 301.314.7683 (TTY/ITT) to make special arrangements.
