USM Board of Regents to Hold Special Meeting December 9

Adelphi, Md. (Dec. 7, 2011) -- The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will hold a special public meeting at 2 p.m. Friday, December 9. The meeting will be held in Room 1312, West Building of the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Inn and Conference Center.

The board will vote on two agenda items. The first item is a proposed policy on best practices for the reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect. The second item is the board's study on the feasibility of a proposed merger between the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

The USM conducted a study of a potential merger of the two campuses, as directed by the 2011 Maryland General Assembly's Joint Chairmen's Report. The report directed the board to submit a study examining the advantages and disadvantages of such a merger. The study, due to the joint chairmen by December 15, will be made public at the special meeting. In conducting the study, the board has considered issues related to mission, quality of learning, reputation and rankings, institutional cultures, administration, and costs.

A link to view a live video stream of the meeting will be made available at 2 p.m. December 9 on the USM home page, www.usmd.edu.
