Chancellor Kirwan Appoints Search Committee for USM Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
Adelphi, Md. (Feb. 6, 2012) -- William
E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland (USM), today
announced the appointment of the search and screening committee for the
position of USM senior vice chancellor for academic affairs.
In November 2011, Irwin L. "Irv" Goldstein announced he will
leave his position as USM senior vice chancellor for academic affairs on June
30, 2012, the official end of the academic year. He will work on special
projects for the USM office and the University of Maryland, College Park
campus, where he is a tenured faculty member.
The chair of the search committee is Donald F. Boesch, president of the University of Maryland
Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) and USM vice chancellor for
environmental sustainability.

Katie
Ryan, senior adviser to the chancellor, is the committee liaison to the Office
of the Chancellor. Staff to the committee is Joan T. Marionni, assistant to the
senior vice chancellor for academic affairs.
The
work of the search and screening committee will conclude with its
recommendation of finalists for consideration by Chancellor Kirwan. The
chancellor will make the final selection. It is anticipated the search process
will take four months.

feel a special debt of gratitude to Irv for his superb work during these many
years at the College Park campus and for the University System of Maryland,
particularly his leadership of academic affairs at USM the past eight years,"
Chancellor Kirwan said. "He truly will be missed."
The
major responsibilities of the senior vice chancellor include coordinating
academic and research activities across the USM, leading major system wide
academic priorities, including course redesign and the system's closing the achievement
gap initiative, and providing leadership to the USM Office of Academic Affairs,
which includes responsibilities for academic planning and accountability,
academic policy, articulation, and faculty affairs.
In addition, department
staff serves as liaisons to the USM Board of Regents Committee on Education
Policy, the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) Committee on Education
Policy, the MHEC Financial Assistance Advisory Council, the MHEC Student
Transfer Advisory Committee, the Council of University System Faculty, the
Maryland K-16 Partnership in Teaching and Learning, and the System Student
Council.
