Chancellor Caret Statement on Mass Shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue

(Baltimore, MD) Oct. 29, 2018 -- University System of Maryland Chancellor Robert Caret today issued the following statement regarding the mass shooting at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.

“On behalf of University System of Maryland, I want to extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected by the horrific shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh.   Today, we mourn this devastating loss of innocent life, we condemn the anti-Semitic hatred at the heart of this heinous crime, and we pray for the victims, their families, and the Squirrel Hill community.  Our individual institutions will also be proactive in their efforts to protect places of religious observance, and address any needs of the faculty, staff, and students that comprise their campus communities.

“My hope is that tomorrow, we use our sadness and anger to drive us forward into righteous action: standing up to hatred and bigotry wherever and whenever they manifest themselves; fighting against extremism and intolerance; demanding serious action to combat gun violence; and working together to repair the world.  Honoring the lives and memories of those so cruelly taken from us calls for nothing less.”
