USM Board of Regents Committee on Economic Development and Technology Commercialization Meets March 25

Baltimore, Md. (March 23, 2021) – The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Committee on Economic Development and Technology Commercialization will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 25.

The committee will hear a presentation on featured startup InventWood. InventWood uses material science innovations to alter and enhance wood for a variety of purposes. The technology makes wood considerably strong, insulating, and even transparent. The company is based on technology developed by a team of material scientists at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) led by Professor Liangbing Hu. UMCP Chief Innovation Officer Julie Lenzer will further discuss how the university supports startups, such as InventWood, based on intellectual property developed on campus.

MJ Bishop, USM associate vice chancellor and director of the Kirwan Center on Academic Innovation, will discuss the center’s work in areas such as alternative credentials, corporate partnerships, and massive open online courses (MOOCs). USM Vice Chancellor Tom Sadowski will then provide updates on USM Office of Economic Development activities, including the COVID-19 Task Force, legislative news, and the Maryland Momentum Fund.
