Press Availability Following MHEC/USM Campus Safety Summit on Monday, Dec. 4 (3:30 p.m.)

Baltimore, Md. (Dec. 1, 2023) – Leaders from 35 colleges and universities across Maryland will participate in a summit regarding campus safety on Monday, Dec. 4, at the Rita Rossi Colwell Center, 701 E. Pratt Street, Baltimore MD. The summit is co-sponsored by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) and the University System of Maryland (USM).

The summit will allow public and private higher education leaders—including presidents, student affairs deans and vice presidents, and police chiefs—to explore and share best practices to keep their campuses and surrounding communities safe at a time when safety has become a national challenge. It is the first time that leaders from Maryland’s public universities, independent colleges, and community colleges have come together to discuss campus and community security.

The day’s agenda will include a student affairs panel on best practices in prevention and response; lessons learned at Michigan State University, which experienced a mass shooting in February; and a presidents’ panel on campus safety.

At the conclusion of the summit, there will be a 3:30 PM press availability, where four state leaders in higher education will provide their thoughts on the day’s discussion:

  • MHEC Acting Secretary Sanjay Rai
  • USM Chancellor Jay Perman
  • USM Board of Regents Chair Linda Gooden
  • MHEC Chair Cassie Motz
The press availability will take place following the summit in the Colwell Center’s Multi-Purpose Room, located on the 2nd floor. The summit itself is closed to the media.
