USM Board of Regents to Announce Staff Awards, Act on Furlough Authorization Resolution; Also to Hold Discussion on Maryland Course Redesign

Adelphi, Md. (Sept. 15, 2009) - The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents at its next meeting will honor the 2009 recipients of the Board of Regents Staff Awards. The board also will consider a proposed resolution authorizing furloughs and temporary salary reductions of USM employees. A recent state-wide budget action includes a $26-million temporary salary reduction in fiscal year 2010 for USM employees, to be accomplished through a tiered furlough plan and other salary adjustments.

The public session is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, September 18, in the Colony Ballroom of the Adele H. Stamp Student Union at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Other action items before the board include:

   Renovation improvements to the Burkshire Marriott  Conference Hotel at Towson University;

   Proposed amendment to a policy on student classification for admission and tuition purposes.

In addition to reports from the councils of university system presidents, faculty, staff, and students, the regents will participate in a discussion forum on the Maryland Course Redesign Initiative. The system-wide project facilitates the redesign of large-enrollment, multi-section courses using technology-supported active learning strategies. Its goal is to achieve improvements in learning outcomes and reductions in instructional costs.

After the public meeting, the board will meet in executive session.

Background information and agendas will be available at the meeting. Sign language interpreters and/or other appropriate accommodations for eligible individuals with disabilities will be provided upon request. Please call 301.445.2756 (voice) or 301.314.7683 (TTY/ITT) for special arrangements.
