Special Public Meeting of USM Board of Regents Scheduled for Dec. 22; Action to be Taken on Memoranda of Understanding for UMBI Restructuring
Adelphi, Md. (Dec. 18, 2009) - A special public meeting of the University System
of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents is scheduled for 8 a.m. Tuesday, December 22.
The meeting will be held in the Chancellor's Conference Room in the Elkins
Building at the University System of Maryland headquarters, 3300 Metzerott Road,
Adelphi, MD.
Action items before the board include:
• A memorandum
of understanding (MOU) between USM; the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB);
the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC); and the University of
Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) to restructure the  University
of Maryland Biotechnology Institute's (UMBI) Center of Marine Biotechnology as
the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology.
• An MOU between
USM and UMBC to address the assignment of UMBI's Institute of Fluorescence to
UMBC.
The Board of Regents on June 19, 2009 voted to realign UMBI's
centers with other USM institutions to increase multidisciplinary and
collaborative research. Once the realignment is complete, UMBI will no longer
exist as a separate USM institution.

The board will also hear
discussion regarding an admissions and amusement tax derived from ticket
admissions to intercollegiate athletic events. The University of Maryland,
College Park (UMCP) has sought the guidance of the board on this
matter.
After the public meeting, the regents will meet in executive
session.
Background information and agendas will be available at the
meeting. Sign language interpreters and/or other appropriate accommodations for
