Under general supervision, supervises and directs technical work in landscape maintenance, ornamental horticulture, and/or landscape construction.
1. Supervises and trains technicians and grounds personnel in
landscape maintenance, ornamental horticulture, and/or landscape
construction. Determines work priorities, plans, schedules,
assigns and reviews work.
2. Oversees and performs landscaping activities such as planning and
layout of projects, planting and cultivating shrubs, trees, turf
and flowers, erosion control, irrigation mowing practices and
3. Oversees the inspection, evaluation and maintenance of
horticultural or environmental conditions to ensure acceptable

EDUCATION: Bachelors degree in horticulture, agronomy or related field.
EXPERIENCE: Four years in landscape construction, agronomy, or landscape maintenance work to include two years in a lead or supervisory capacity.
OTHER: Licensure by the State of Maryland as a Certified Pesticide Applicator.
Comprehensive knowledge of the practices and techniques of landscape construction, agronomy, and/or landscape maintenance; of plant life as applied to ornamental horticulture; of plant materials, planting techniques, erosion control, and pesticides. Working knowledge of landscape design and construction work. Skill in reading and
interpreting landscape architectural plans, specifications, proposal forms and estimates; in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade; in making field investigations. Ability to plan and program assigned projects; to organize and supervise the work of assigned personnel; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare comprehensive reports; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders and lifts; to work at heights up to 35 feet; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 50 lbs.; to
concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment;to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather and temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C, Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or equivalent driver's license may be required. If required to obtain a Commercial Driver's License, employees will be subjected to drug and alcohol education and testing as required under Federal Highway Administration and the State of Maryland regulations. Certification by the Maryland Nurseryman's Association as a Professional Horticulturist may also be required.
