JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, performs a substantial variety of moderately complex technical support work in a particular field requiring knowledge of physical science.


PRIMARY DUTIES


1. Selects, sets up, adjusts and operates laboratory equipment and apparatus. Selects appropriate auxilliary equipment or alternative testing methods considering factors such as environmental conditions and limitations of equipment.


2. Maintains and repairs laboratory equipment. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment.


3. Fabricates, and tests prototypes of new experiments according to drawings and specifications.


4. Advises and assists others in laboratory experiments in the construction and design of the project.


5. Operates hand and power tools and lab equipment specific to the work such as microscale instruments, oscilloscopes, multimeters, vaccum system, spectrograph, chromatograph, gamma ray detection and other components.


6. Performs a variety of tests such as metallurgical tensile tests, under normal and adverse temperature conditions. Prepares a list of findings upon completion of tests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE: Four years in technical work in physical science or allied field to include at least two years of specialized experience which provided a working knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques applicable to the work of the position for which applying.

OTHER:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

General knowledge of general purpose laboratory equipment according to standard safety practices; of applied aritmetic. Skill in the use of related hand and power tools. Ability work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 50 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to follow oral and written instructions and to communicate effectively.

OTHER:

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Valid Maryland Non-commerical Class C driver's license may be required.
