JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, performs a substantial variety of complex technical support work in a specialty field requiring knowledge of physical science. May lead and train others in assigned area.


PRIMARY DUTIES


1. Designs, develops and fabricates new apparatus and experiments using knowledge of the concepts specific to the respective laboratory. Tests and modifies prototypes and reports results to faculty for acceptance.


2. Coordinates work of outside maintenance personnel to ensure equipment functions properly and safely.


3. Operates and adjusts, maintains, sets up, and makes available complex equipment such as multi-channel analyzer, digitized oscilloscope, spectrometer and other apparatus, instruments and accessories.


4. Operates machine shop equipment such as metal lathes, milling machines grinders, band saws, and tools and equipment such as multimeters, micrometers, calipers, measuring microscopes, and surface or depth gauges.


5. Contacts vendors to determine availability of equipment, materials, and services required to meet the goals of the research effort.


6. Plans and completes projects to develop mechanical, electrical, or structural components and equipment to meet specified user needs.


7. Leads and trains others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE: Six years in technical work in physical science or allied field to include at least four years of specialized experience which provided a working knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques applicable to the work of the position for which applying.

OTHER:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of specific scientific principles involved in the specialty field where assigned; of general purpose laboratory equipment according to standard safety practices; of applied arithmetic. Skill in the use of related hand and power tools. Ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 50 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to follow oral and written instructions and to communicate effectively; to provide guidance and training to others in assigned area.

OTHER:

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Valid Maryland Non-commerical Class C driver's license may be required.
