Nan Mulqueen

Director of Executive Communications

Nan Mulqueen was named director of executive communications by Chancellor Jay A. Perman in January 2020. Nan had previously served as senior director of leadership communications at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) during Perman’s tenure as president. As director of executive communications, Nan is responsible for all communications from the Office of the Chancellor and for advising the chancellor and USM senior leadership on communications issues and strategies.

Nan has nearly 30 years’ experience in leadership communications, directing teams responsible for advising c-suite executives on all aspects of their individual and organizational communications, establishing their authority on relevant topics, and raising their personal and institutional profiles. She carries out strategic communications plans, delivers comms products—such as speeches, statements, testimony, commentaries, and articles—and prepares principals for print and broadcast media.

Nan began working in higher education in 2009, as director of leadership communications for the University of Delaware (UD) and then-President Patrick T. Harker, before leaving to join Perman at UMB. Prior to UD, Nan was speechwriter to Maryland Superintendent of Schools Nancy S. Grasmick, then the country’s longest serving state secretary of education.

Nan started her career in public relations, primarily for private- and public-sector health care organizations. She has a BA in English from St. Francis University in PA and an MA in Communications from Towson University.

Nan lives in South Baltimore with her husband.
