Timothy McDonough
Vice Chancellor for Communications and Marketing
Timothy McDonough was appointed as the vice chancellor for communications and marketing by Chancellor Emeritus Robert L. Caret in 2019. McDonough is a veteran communications professional with more than 30 years of experience in higher education, association and nonprofit executive management, public policy, and strategic communications.
As the USM vice chancellor for marketing and communications, McDonough provides strategic and comprehensive marketing and communications leadership, management, and support for the system, Chancellor, senior leadership, and the USM Board of Regents. McDonough leads an office responsible for communicating effectively the advancement of USM's strategic priorities, and for helping to increase various publics' understanding of and appreciation for the system and its role in advancing opportunities for students and the state.
Prior to joining the USM, McDonough served as the vice president for government and public affairs at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB). In this role, McDonough directed AGB’s policy activities, public affairs and strategic communications, and trustee advocacy initiatives. He is a recognized leader in American higher education
Before joining AGB, he served for 18 years as the vice president for communications and marketing at the American Council on Education (ACE) and for six years as the vice president for public affairs at the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. He also held university communications and development roles at the University of Maryland, College Park.
McDonough earned his bachelor’s degree in government at Georgetown University and a Master of Arts in journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park.
