PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Towson University, serving both residential and commuter students, provides a broad range of undergraduate programs in both the traditional arts and sciences and applied professional fields, as well as selected graduate and doctoral level programs.
MISSION
Towson University is a premier, metropolitan comprehensive institution, nationally recognized for quality and value, focused on teaching and committed to providing a broad range of opportunities for undergraduate and graduate education. The undergraduate curriculum will enable students to acquire the intellectual skills essential to effectively communicate in speaking and writing, the gathering and evaluation of information, critical analysis, competence in the use of technology and an appreciation of diverse points of view. The University offers post-baccalaureate education including certificate programs for advanced education and workforce training, masters degrees in traditional and applied disciplines, and doctoral programs. The University will continue to respond to the Baltimore metropolitan area educational and workforce needs.
VISION
Towson University will be a regionally ranked Doctoral/Research - Intensive University with a broad array of programs that meet student needs and workforce requirements. The University expects to expand undergraduate offerings in inter-disciplinary fields that build on existing strengths and in graduate areas to the doctoral level that expands the commitment to professional fields in the arts and sciences, information technology, education, the health professions, and business. Through its faculty, known for excellent teaching, basic and applied research, and creative activities, the University responds to the political and economic needs of the Baltimore metropolitan area.
KEY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
Goal 1: Increase retention and graduation rates.
Objective 1.1. Increase the six-year graduation rates of degree seeking full-time undergraduates from 63% for the 1994 cohort to 64% for the 1998 cohort.
Objective 1.2. Increase the six-year graduation rates of degree seeking full-time undergraduate African-Americans from 50% for the 1994 cohort to 51% for the 1998 cohort.
Objective 1.3. Increase the 2nd year retention rates of degree seeking full-time undergraduates from 82% in 1999 to 84% by 2004.
Goal 2: Contribute to the development of Maryland's workforce and economy.
Objective 2.1. Increase the number of degrees awarded in the I.T. fields from 115 in 1999 to 170 by 2004.3
Objective 2.2. Maintain greater than 88% professional nursing exam passing rate.
Objective 2.3. Maintain greater than 25% of graduates furthering their post-baccalaureate education.
Objective 2.4. Increase the number of teacher education graduates recommended for MSDE certification from 478 in 1999 to 540 by 2004.
Objective 2.5. Maintain greater than 75% baccalaureate graduates employed in Maryland one year after graduation.
Goal 3: Increase the diversity of the University community.
Objective 3.1. Increase the 2nd year retention rates of degree seeking full-time undergraduate African-Americans from 81% in 1999 to equal to or greater than 83% by 2004.
Objective 3.2. Increase the percentage of all minority students in the enrolled student population from 16% in 1999 to 16.2% by 2004.
Objective 3.3. Increase the percentage of African - American students in the enrolled population from 11% in 1999 to 11.5% by 2004.
Goal 4: Increase public and educational services in undeserved areas of the State.
Objective 4.1. Increase the percentage of Student Government Association-affiliated organizations performing volunteer work from 50% in 1999 to 90% by 2002.
Objective 4.2. Increase higher education center enrollments from 3,129 credits in 1999 to 17,000 credits by 2004 to meet workforce and economic demands.
Goal 5: Increase revenue from alternative sources.
Objective 5.1. Achieve Capital Campaign goal to increase from $11.1M through 1999 to $17.5M by the end of 2002.
Objective 5.2. Increase scholarship support available from the Foundation from $280,000 in 1999 to $430,000 by 2003.
Objective 5.3. Increase funds secured through grants and contracts from $10.7M in 1999 to $21M by 2004.
