International Education
Building a Global Community of Scholars and Researchers
The University System of Maryland is a truly global community of students, scholars and researchers.
Although our institutions are firmly rooted in Maryland, their reach has no boundaries.
This year, USM universities welcomed about 9,500 international students to their campuses, while also
providing thousands of U.S.-based students and faculty members with opportunities to engage in scholarship
and research in every corner of the globe. Global learning is also taking place at “home” through
virtual global classrooms linking our students with students around the world. Through both curricular and extracurricular
learning opportunities, USM students encounter different cultures and new perspectives, build understanding, and grow as
global citizens who are inspired to better their world.
Celebrating International Education Week
International Education Week is a joint initiative of the
U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education,
recognizing the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
During this celebration, USM institutions present programs that highlight the unique
contributions of our international students and that build awareness of global learning and exchange opportunities.

To advance the USM’s commitment to international education,
the USM has established a Global Engagement Advisory Council, which includes representatives of
USM institutions who are engaged with international students and global learning and exchange programs.
This council advises USM leaders on opportunities to expand and invigorate international education across the system.
