Responding to the challenges that lie ahead

In preparing a vision for our institutions for the coming decade, the USM decided to begin by carefully analyzing the data on current and projected trends and changes, in the hopes of crafting a plan that would truly respond to the State's current and future needs.

In the introduction, we describe our overall vision of where we want the USM to be in 10 years. The following pages lay out how we intend to get there. Each section first discusses an issue of concern to higher education and the State. Then, under "USM Response," each section describes how the USM's institutions will meet the challenges posed by each issue. The USM response to each issue is centered around how our institutions can meet the needs of the State and its citizens.

Following this general discussion are specific strategies from each USM institution. The institutional responses get at the heart of how the USM's universities, colleges, and research centers are prepared to meet Maryland's needs, now and in the future.
