USM Chancellor Appoints Denise Wilkerson New Chief of Staff

Adelphi, Md. (March 28, 2018) –University System of Maryland (USM) Chancellor Robert L. Caret today announced the appointment of Denise Wilkerson as the Chief of Staff to the chancellor and USM Office.

Wilkerson currently serves as Special Assistant to the Provost at American University, in Washington, D.C. Her appointment reflects a return to the USM community, given that Wilkerson held several positions at University of Maryland University College (UMUC) between 2001 and 2008.

Wilkerson will succeed Janice Doyle, a leader in state of Maryland higher education for more than 40 years. Doyle’s retirement is effective March 31, after serving as Chief of Staff and Secretary to the Board of Regents since 2007.

Wilkerson has more than 23 years of higher education administrative experience in the areas of academic affairs, student support services, minority recruitment and retention programs, and distance education.

“I am pleased to appoint Denise to this vital leadership role, given the background she brings in appreciating the complex issues that routinely surface in higher education, and particularly the USM,” Caret said. “We are fortunate to have someone with her vast experience in managing issues ranging from shared governance and strategic planning to personnel search processes.”

“I have a deep admiration for the institutional diversity within the University System of Maryland,” said Wilkerson.  “I am thrilled to return home and contribute to the system’s commitments to excellence, affordability, and support for the state’s distinctive regions.”

Wilkerson earned both her B.A. in Political Science & International Affairs and her M.S. in Higher Education from Florida State University.
