Student IT User Support Specialist

Purpose of Position

This position will provide Tier-1 IT User Support for the USM Office, located in the Wilson H. Elkins building on Metzerott Road (approximately 1 mile from the main UMCP campus).  Our IT environment is a mix of Windows and Mac OSX systems; the main software applications in use on both platforms are the Microsoft Office 365 suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams), Adobe Acrobat, and Zoom.  The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience providing support in an administrative working environment.  The position is a part-time appointment for no more than 20 hours per week.

Responsibilities

The IT User Support assistant will provide in-person and remote assistance to end-users for various hardware and software issues; install and update software on desktops and laptops; assist full-time IT staff with the ongoing IT equipment inventory project; set up new computers for deployment; and document user problems and resolutions in the help-desk ticketing system. 

Because USM IT Operations supports all IT needs for the USM Office there may also be other support-related opportunities (server maintenance, network configuration, etc.) for a candidate to enhance/employ their IT skill set.

The schedule for this position can be flexible with a 3-5 days per week arrangement. There may also be an option for occasional telework.

Minimum Qualifications             

A good understanding of general computer support (both hardware and software) for both Windows and Mac OSX; a friendly and helpful demeanor along with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical staff members; strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office 365 suite of applications; the ability to troubleshoot issues and research solutions to unfamiliar problems; and the ability to work with or without direct supervision.

This position is only open to current University of Maryland, College Park undergraduate students.

Hiring Minimum: $20/hr

Hiring Maximum: $22/hr
