November 22, 2019 | 8:45 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. | Maritime Conference Center, 692 Maritime Blvd, Linthicum Heights, MD 21090

Please join us for STATS 2020: Revisioning Introductory Statistics for a New Generation, a one-day statewide convening for Maryland faculty and administrators focused on the teaching of introductory and developmental statistics courses and concepts. We will be examining what lies ahead for introductory statistics based on research and evidence-based practice, examining the important role that statistics education plays in the citizenship of our graduates, and discussing how to apply best practice pedagogy in the statistics classroom.

Featured Speakers

Daniel Kaplan, DeWitt Wallace Professor of Mathematics & Computer Science, Macalester College

Professor Kaplan specializes in the techniques of applied math, including statistics and computation, to problems in the sciences. His professional training is in biomedical engineering, and he came to Macalester from the physiology department at McGill Medical School. He has written textbooks in nonlinear dynamics (chaos theory) applied to biology and medicine, in scientific computation, and most recently in statistical modeling. He won Macalester’s 2006 Excellence in Teaching Award for his work creating an introductory quantitative curriculum consisting of calculus and statistics courses that are among the most heavily subscribed at the college. This work has attracted national attention and financial support from the National Science Foundation, the Keck Foundation, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Prof. Kaplan also participates in Macalester’s public health concentration, teaching an introductory course in epidemiology.

Deborah Rumsey, Associated Professor & Program Specialist Faculty, The Ohio State University

Deborah Rumsey joined the statistics faculty in 2004. She currently teaches and coordinates STAT 1430 (Statistics for the Business Sciences). Dr. Rumsey is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. She received her PhD in Statistics from Ohio State University in 1993. She is the co-founder of CAUSE: The Consortium for the Advancement of Undergraduate Statistics Education, a nationally known group that promotes statistics education and has written papers and given talks and workshops in the area. She has written 5 books, including Statistics for Dummies, Statistics for Dummies 2, Probability for Dummies, Statistics Workbook for Dummies, and Essentials of Statistics for Dummies. She designed several of their first conferences: USCOTS - the United States Conference on Teaching Statistics, which gathers over 400 members every other year. Dr. Rumsey is also involved with the Journal of Statistics Education.
